Rationale

This project is interested in biogeochemical cycles. It investigates the nutrient cyle of the grassland mixtures in detail by quantifying ecosystem nutrient pools and fluxes and by setting up complete nutrient budgets. Based on the results of the preceding phases of the Research Unit and some additional experiments concerning processes of nutrient release in the current phase, we aim at a synthesis of the effects of biodiversity on nutrient cycling. Our approach of incorporating diversity effects as driver in an ecosystem compartment model will complement the focus on plant interactions and simple vegetation-soil feedbacks in the Modelling subproject.
