The Botanical Garden is situated in the city centre of Jena. It is an institution of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and belongs to the Institute for Systematic Botany.

The main functions of the Botanical Garden are

  • enhancement of the academic education
  • plant cultivation for research purposes
  • conservation of genetic resources and plant biodiversity
  • cultivation of a wide variety of plant species including rare and endangered ones

Furthermore, the Botanical Garden is a tourist attraction and plays an important role as an ameliorant of the microclimate. Appr. 12,000 plant species from all over the world are cultivated on an area of 4.5 hectares in the gardens and in the glasshouses.
