Allan Turner grew up in Peterborough, England. He studied at the Universities of Reading (B.A. in German, 1972, M.Phil. in Medieval Studies, 1975), Leeds (Graduate Certificate in Education, 1975), Cambridge (M.Phil. in Linguistics, 1980) and Newcastle (Ph.D. in Translation Studies, 2003). In addition to working in secondary and further education in Britain, he has taught English language practice at the Universities of Trier (1980-84), Basel (1985-95), Greifswald (2005-7), and Marburg (2007-9).
His research interests are: the works of Tolkien, translation theory, and the language of literature. Among his personal interests are music, particularly choral music (in Basel he founded the English Seminar Choir, which is still in existence) and walking in the mountains.
