Entrepreneurial interest in offspring of family business owners

Family-owned firms represent a strong force in Germany's economy. However the number of family businesses that are passed on to family members is declining. This study investigates the development of entrepreneurial interest and motivation to-wards business succession in offspring of family business owners. Studies showed that early enterpreurial interest is one of the most important predictors of entrepre-neurial career decisions. In adolescents of families with businesses early entrepre-neurial interest could lead towards choosing an educational path that facilitates later succession of the family-owned firm. Moreover, parenting style, family climate, positive parental role models, and values towards tradition, are expected to influence adolescents' enterepreneurial interest and motivation to take on the family business.

Structured interviews with adolescents aged 14-18 from family-owned firms and their parents will be conducted separately. Over a two week period diary records should give insights into adolescents' extracurricular, family-business related activities.
