Effectiveness of Interventions to
Promote Intergroup Relations in Children and Adolescents:
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Controlled Evaluation Research
Project summary
Numerous intervention models are available for promoting intergroup relations in children and adolescents (e.g. racially integrated schooling, bilingual education, training social-cognitive skills, multicultural education). Although existing reviews report relatively positive outcome assessments, they reveal several disadvantages. For example, they are restricted to single program types (e.g. racially integrated schooling), do not refer to current evaluative research, or demonstrate an inappropriate standard of review technique. Thus the proposed research project is aimed to perform a current state of the art research review and a quantitative meta-analysis on the effectiveness of intergroup programs on children and adolescents.
This is worth doing for several reasons: First, a description of previous research activities will disclose any gaps in research and point out historical trends. Second, the quantitative analyses within the meta-analytic evaluation of controlled outcome research will identify which programs or program features are evidence-based. The results of the project will be important not only for the practice of intergroup promotion but also for future research as well as for the delivery of scientific advice to social policymakers.
