Aesthetics Beyond Aesthetics
The paper advocates an opening up of aesthetics beyond its traditionally prevailing frame, the comprehension of art. `Aesthetics beyond aesthetics' means an aesthetics beyond artistics - beyond the mere contemplation of art. It conceives of aesthetics as a discipline covering the full range of aisthesis and exhibiting a cross-disciplinary structure. Such an opening up of aesthetics is advisable with respect to current phenomena and the contemporary relevance of the aesthetic as well as to the analysis of art. The current processes of global aestheticization - concerning individual and urban styling, our living environment, economics, ecology, science, etc. - are extending the aesthetic and at the same time retailoring its cut as well as its esteem. Aesthetics has to take this into consideration for three reasons: to fulfil its proper task as the reflective discipline of the aesthetic, to provide criticism of aestheticization processes, and to consider the repercussions for traditional aesthetics. The same applies - beyond the contemporary aesthetic fashioning of reality - with respect to the presently increasing aesthetic comprehension of reality as caused by the dominance of the media and related phenomena. This first engenders a tendency towards the softening and derealization of reality which affects our behavior towards reality outside the media world too; we don't take reality to be that real any more. Secondly the traditional primacy of vision is being called into question, with other senses like hearing and touch achieving new appreciation. A breakdown of the traditional hierarchy and a reorganization of the sensuous field is taking place - aisthesis altogether is undergoing a reconfiguration. Thirdly, a remarkable revalidation of experiences outside electronic media is occurring, putting particular emphasis on those aspects which are inimitable and unsubstitutable by media-experience. Finally, three aspects of the recharting of the field of aesthetics through its opening out beyond the realm of art to the full range of aisthesis are considered: the conceptual soundness of this attempt thanks to the family resemblance of the different meanings of the aesthetic; the advantages of this expansion for the discipline, particularly with respect to the analysis of art - since art too is always related to the state of the aesthetic beyond art; the internally cross-disciplinary structure of such an aesthetics covering the full range of aisthesis. |
